Hippies
The hippie subculture was a movement in the united states during the 1960's. The term ¨hippie¨ comes from ¨hipster¨. Some of the hippies created their own groups and communities, listened to rock and embraced sexual liberation. They also used drugs like marijuana known now as ¨weed ¨ or ¨ loud¨ and a drug called LSD. They used these drugs to enter another state of mind, or ¨get high¨.
Summer of Love, young dreamers converged in the Haight. Hippies normally protested and reformed rallies. Hippie fashions and values had a big effect on culture, changing popular music, television, film, literature, and arts. Since the movement in the 1960's, many parts of hippie culture have been associated with mainstream society.
Hippies normally were symbolized by the peace sign, because they stood by peace and wanted nothing but peace and togetherness. The peace symbol was created in 1958 by a British artist named Gerald Holtom. It was made for the DAC which is the Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear War. Later in time adopted by the hippies.
Another thing that made Hippies so iconic was the way they dressed. People in the 60's admired hippies dress style because it was so free and rebellious, which made everyone want to hop on the Hippie bandwagon. Celebrities also made Hippies dress code more popular, for example The Beatles. The Beatles were the most popular rock band in the 1960's. People loved and admired everything about them, which made people want to dress like them. The Beatles never really told if they were hippies or not, but they sure did act like it.
